James Czywczynski, LPC

I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor who specializes in working with teens and young adults struggling with school, depression, anxiety, transitions, rule-breaking, and more. I also specialize in working with children identified with developmental disorders and their families. My goal is to help my clients reach their maximum potential at school, home, and work – even if it feels hard. For those that have been resistant to therapy in the past (specifically teenage boys), my humor, creativity, and relaxed nature helps my clients feel more comfortable talking. It’s important to me to help empower and encourage my clients to make changes in their life that lead them to what matters most.

In addition to working with younger clients, I also have extensive experience working with adults across the lifespan on addiction challenges, big life transitions, and family/relationship conflict. Through individual, couple, or family sessions, we can work together to help you identify what matters most in your life and create realistic goals.

I earned my Bachelor’s from the University of Wyoming and my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Adams State University. I have over a decade of clinical experience, working in programs like a therapeutic day school and community-based mental health clinics with a focus on addiction. I also grew up on an air force base in Germany, giving me unique insight into the benefits and challenges of the military lifestyle.

I live in Charlottesville with my wife, Alexandra Werntz, Ph.D. (also a therapist at A&C), and our three hairless cats. I play drums, guitar, and bass; enjoy playing in local bands; and enjoy the live music around town.
